Tornados Essay Example For Students

Tornados Essay Dorothy lived with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry on a small farm in Kansas. Their tiny house stood alone on a large, flat prairie. Dorothy had only one friend, her dog Toto. He was a small black dog who loved to jump and play. One day while Dorothy and Toto were playing, they heard the awful sound of a storm. The wind roared and the dust blew smoky circles in the air. Dorothy was frightened. Uncle Henry stopped working and shouted, Theres a cyclone coming, run for the cellar! The Wizard of Oz By: Frank Baum (1939). Tornados remain a frightening fact of life for those of us in the Midwest. These powerful acts of nature can wreak havoc on everything in its path of destruction. Tornado, twister, funnel, and cyclone: all are synonyms for the awesome force, which has intrigued and puzzled scientists for years. We will write a custom essay on Tornados specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now A tornado is the most violent of all storms. It is a violent rotating column of air extending from within a thundercloud or a developing thundercloud down to ground level. Tornados can vary in diameter from tens of meters to about two kilometers with an average diameter of approximately 50 meters. In the northern hemisphere, winds of the tornado generally blow counterclockwise around a center of extremely low atmospheric pressure. In the majority of tornadoes that occur in the southern hemisphere, winds blow clockwise. The peak wind speeds can range from 75 mph to almost 300 mph. Some of the more powerful tornados can lift cattle, cars, and even mobile homes. A tornado becomes visible when a condensation funnel made of water vapor forms in very low pressures. It also becomes visible when the tornado lifts dust, dirt, and debris upward from the ground. Most tornados are just small, intense cyclones. The term cyclone comes from the Greek word circle. Sometimes, in very rare occasions, the winds whirl in the direction opposite of a cyclone. For the most part, tornados have damage path less than 500 meters wide, move at less then 35 miles per hour, and last only a few minutes. The very violent tornados may reach up to one mile in diameter, travel at speeds up to 60 miles per hour, and blow for more than an hour. Many tornados, including the very strong ones develop from a special type of thunderstorm that is known as a supercell. A supercell is a long-lived, rotating thunderstorm that is up to 16 kilometers in diameter that may last several hours, travel hundreds and hundreds of miles, and produce many tornados. Each supercell has the potential to spawn a tornado or a sequence of tornados. For the most part, scientists generally agree that the first stage in the formation of a tornado is an interaction between the storm updraft and the winds. An updraft is a current of warm moist air that rises upward through the thunderstorm. The updraft interacts with the winds, which has to change with the height in favorable ways for the interaction to occur. This type of interaction causes the updraft to rotate at the middle levels of the atmosphere. The rotating updraft, which is also known as a mesocyclone, stabilizes the thunderstorm and gives it its long-lived supercell characteristics. The next sta ge is the development of a current of cooler air that moves in a downward direction on the backside of the storm, known as a rear-flank downdraft. The speed of the downdraft increases and the airdrops to the ground rapidly where it fans out at speeds that can go over 100 miles per hour. In 1971, Theodore Fujita developed a classification system based on the damage done to manmade structures. His Fujita-scale classification system or the F-scale ranks a tornado as weak (F1 and F2), strong (F2 and F3) or violent (F4 and F5). The F-scale is used only in places where manmade structures exist. The United States has the highest average number of tornados a year in the world with about 800 per year. Most of theses storms occur in a stretch of land known as Tornado Alley, which extends across the Midwestern and Southern states, especially Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas. Australia ranks second in the number of twisters a year. The tornado prime time is spring and early summer in the late afternoon and early evening. .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf , .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf .postImageUrl , .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf , .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf:hover , .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf:visited , .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf:active { border:0!important; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf:active , .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue3b0b9d47c0e958698e01a0c3ff1cccf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Sorry for Partyin' EssayMeteorologists can predict possible severe weather from 12 to 48 hours in advance. They make forecasts using weather balloons, satellites, and conventional weather radar. Computers also help meteorologists analyze the data and recognize when conditions favor the formation of thunderstorms. In the U.S., the National Weather Service issues tornado watches when conditions in the atmosphere promote the formation of tornados and they issue tornado warnings if someone actually sees a funnel cloud. It is difficult for scientists to study tornados because they form and vanish quickly and occupy just a small area. One other problem is that scientists do not exactly know what causes tornados, so they cannot get to the right place and the right time to gather data. One way that technology advancements help scientists is they can make computer models of thunderstorms and tornados. Tornado safety is important to minimizing loss of life and injury. During a tornado, seek shelter in an underground structure, such as a basement, subway station, or a parking garage. Stay away from windows and upper stories of buildings. If you are in a car, try to get out by driving at a right angle to the path of the tornado. If you cant read shelter or get out of the tornados path, lay flat ditch or other hollow place. Tornados are very dangerous and should always be taken seriously. The tornado chasing should be left up to the professionals. Appropriate precautions need to be taken during a tornado warning. Dont be swept away like Toto and Dorothy. Category: Science

6 Quick and Easy Tips for Proofreading

6 Quick and Easy Tips for Proofreading 6 Quick and Easy Tips for Proofreading Us professional proofreaders are a mysterious breed; a clan of brooding grammar obsessives and spelling pedants, forever clinging on to our red correction pens and shouting verbose slogans about not splitting infinitives. Needless to say, this slavish devotion to typographical accuracy is why we’re so good at spotting mistakes that other people miss. Don’t worry, though, you don’t have to be quite so enamored with editorial excellence to proofread your own writing. To help out, we’ve prepared six quick tips for proofreading that anyone can use. 6 Tips for Proofreading Proofreading Tip #1 – Plan for Your Proofreading! The biggest mistake people make when proofreading is not allowing enough time. Spotting errors in your work requires patience and care, so you need to make sure you set aside time to go back over everything before the deadline for your paper. Proofreading Tip #2 – Vary Your Reading Style Proofreading demands slow and careful reading. The best way to do this is often to print out your work and read it on paper rather than on a computer screen, which gives you â€Å"fresh eyes† and helps make errors stand out. Alternatives include reading out loud, reading backwards (i.e., starting at the end of your paper) and even reading upside down! Proofreading Tip #3 – Use Computers Wisely†¦ Although printing your work out can aid proofreading, your computer also has a few tricks up its plastic sleeves. Spellcheckers, for example, can be invaluable. The â€Å"Find† function in Microsoft Word is a great time saver if you spot a repeated error, too, as it lets you quickly check for additional instances of the same kind. Proofreading Tip #4 – †¦But Look Out for Homonyms! The downside of computer spellcheckers is that they’ll miss erroneous homophones: i.e., words that sound the same as other words, so aren’t spelling mistakes, but are still not the word you intended. Computers can also struggle with acronyms and proper nouns, so be especially careful to double check these. Proofreading Tip #5 – Check Your References Referencing is often where errors creep into otherwise excellent academic papers, so make sure that you check your citations before submitting. The best way to do this is to compare your citations against a style guide provided by your college. Using a citation generator can help too. Proofreading Tip #6 – Stay Fresh! The last of our quick tips for proofreading is to stay fresh! Since concentration is vital to effective proofreading, it’s important to take a break now and then. It can even be worth taking a day away from your paper before you start proofreading. The first step to good proofreading, then, is sometimes to do something else entirely!

NELP REPORT CHAPTER SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS - Essay Example The research points out receptive and expressive skills. Receptive skills range from simple decoding to reading comprehension while expressive skills include spelling and composition. Further the analysis is divided into primary and secondary analyses. Primary analyses try to identify preschool and kindergarten predictors of conventional literacy skills. While secondary analyses are about the questions concerning the age of assessment for the predictor variable and the age of assessment for the measurement of the conventional literacy outcome variable. Since accuracy of statistics is not perfect therefore Confidence Interval is used to measure the estimate of accuracy. Data about different skills related to decoding reveal strong relationship for Alphabet Knowledge (AK) while moderate relation for Phonological Awareness (PA), oral language, ability to write and concept about print. The data about skills related to reading reveal moderate relationship for AK, print knowledge, PA and r apid naming while a low correlations for phonological STM, oral language, and writing. The data about skills related to spelling show an average correlation for concepts about print and PA skills, while moderate relationship was found for oral language skills, writing, phonological STM and rapid naming of objects or colors.

Which non-war law enacted by the US Congress was most important Essay

Which non-war law enacted by the US Congress was most important - Essay Example Congress enacted for the initial purpose of discouraging acts of insurrection which supported the Confederacy. President Abraham Lincoln was reluctant at first to approve the act in 1861, considering impracticalities in view of the former triumphs and spirit of the secessionists to sustain the old slaveholding tradition. It gradually served him, nevertheless, a foresight that confiscation of properties by the federal government could make ends meet in resolving to abolish and keep black slavery from use for rebellion upon employment to labor by the federal authority. Alongside the militia act, in the findings of J. McPherson, the author explicates â€Å"one section of the confiscation act authorized the president to employ contrabands for the suppression of the rebellion ‘in such manner as he may judge best’† (McPherson 378). Though such did not necessitate for the president to recruit black soldiers, somewhere, the substance of the act brought Lincoln to ponder o n what could be more sensibly and productively achieved. When blacks were charged with military duties – he pondered as though he was inclined to prefer registration of the colored men for labor in that manner so that they may divert services, originally possessed by their previous masters, to the government honoured by the Union. In a way, hence, the permission of the law of confiscation enabled slaves to be identified as contrabands, nullifying ownerships by slave bearers in the seceded states. To analyze, the act seemed flexible and its implication at this stage leads to manifestation of liberty that it could well be a strategic move to make southern rebels account for new perspectives in treating the essence of revolution. Apparently, confiscation acts became altogether a driving force for Lincoln in his pursuit of enlisting black soldiers that, in one of his conversations with a military governor, he expressed â€Å"The colored population is the great available and yet unavailed of, force for restoring the Union† (379). His motivation, as such, stirred further interests in his administration to support him as he managed to realize probable competencies of the black laborers in a number of aspects as â€Å"troops to garrison forts, protect supply dumps and wagon trains, and perform rear-area duties† (380). Hence, designating the colored men for these functions could be perceived as an indirect approach of possibly easing racial discrimination as blacks blended with the whites in order for the whites to be relieved of exhaustive menial tasks since able-bodied negroes may come to their aid to save energy and other crucial resources necessary for the Union to cope with the demands of the civil war. This was especially an advantage for, at the time, a militia draft was ordered by the government to address the scarcity of the volunteering northern whites. By 1862, several Republicans particularly the radicals among them sought to enlist bla cks, or the confiscated contrabands, to be armed for a dual cause of helping the Union by turning them against the confederate south as well as stimulating their hope of being delivered from the unwanted bondage to oppression and social injustice through combative efforts. When the law took effect, the system governed by confiscation acts, however, exhibited unequal wages – a feature of an unpleasant outcome yet despite which, colored regiments proceeded to operate â€Å"as labor battalions to dig trenches, load and unload supplies, and perform heavy fatigue duty for white troops†

Shakespeares Definition Of A Ghost Essay -- essays research papers

Shakespeare's Definition of a Ghost The American Heritage Dictionary, published in 1973, defines a ghost as, "the spirit or shade of a dead person, supposed to haunt living persons or former habitats." Unfortunately, this simple definition does not explain where a ghost comes from or why it haunts. When used in the context of Shakespeare's Hamlet, this definition seems to suggest that the ghost who visits Hamlet truly is his dead father seeking revenge. To the modern reader, this straightforward interpretation adequately characterizes the ghost and his purpose; however, to the Elizabethan audience the ghost's identity proved more complex. For the Elizabethans, four different types of ghosts existed, each with its own purpose and qualities. Before they could determine the meaning behind the ghost's appearance, the Elizabethans had to classify the ghost in one of the four categories. Similar to the modern definition, the Elizabethans believed in the possibility of the ghost being an actual dead person sent to perform some task or mission. On the other hand, the ghost could be the devil disguised in the form of a deceased loved one, tempting to procure the soul of one of the living. The nonbelievers among the Elizabethans saw ghosts as omens, telling of troubled time ahead, or simply as the hallucinations of a crazed person or group. Shakespeare recognized the complexity of the Elizabethan ghost's identity and played off of the confusion, making the question of identity a key theme to his play. Throughout Hamlet Shakespeare explores each of the possible identities of the ghost with each one adding a new twist to Hamlet's plight. When news of the ghost's presence first reaches Hamlet and Horatio, they declare it an omen of forthcoming evil. Hamlet's reaction indicates that he is not surprised, "My father's spirit - in arms? All is not well. / I doubt some foul play. Would the night were come! / Till then sit still, my soul. Foul deeds will rise, / Though all the earth o'erwhelm them, to men's eyes" (I.iii.255-259). Hamlet already believes that Gertrude has committed a "foul deed" in marrying Claudius and the ghost's appearance supports Hamlet's anger. At the time, Hamlet does not know of his father's murder, but he suspects there may be more behind the ghost's appearance... ... revenge and kill Claudius. Before, the ghost was the only proof Hamlet had of his father's murder and he needed its assurance in order to act out his revenge. After The Mousetrap and Claudius' reaction, Hamlet has seen with his own eyes the King's guilt and has enough evidence to seek revenge on his own - the reality of the ghost is no longer needed. Depending on the view of the ghost, the tragedy of Hamlet can be understood in several distinct ways. When seen as an omen, the blood bath with which the play ends is both unavoidable and foreshadowed. If the ghost is truly Hamlet's father, than Hamlet dies heroically, revenging his father's untimely murder. On the other hand, if the ghost is really the devil, Hamlet has been tragically tricked into relinquishing control of his soul; sadly Hamlet knew better, but his reasoning and intelligence were no match for the devil's guile. Finally, the hallucination view of the ghost presents Hamlet as a tragic character whose obsession with his father's death and his mother's incestuous marriage lead to his downfall. Regardless of the reality or validity of the ghost, Hamlet's death and thus his tragedy, remains.

Pizza Store Layout Simulation: Apply the Learning Curve Theory

A learning curve, in common terms, â€Å"is used to describe the effort required to acquire a new skill (e. g. , expertise with a new tool) over a specific period of time† Wikipedia. org. In scholarly terms, â€Å"Learning curves are also an integral part in planning corporate strategy, such as decisions concerning pricing, capital investment, and operating costs based on experience curves† Chase-Jacobs-Aquilano. In the pizzeria scenario presented requires a full understanding of the cause and effect of decisions made and making adjustments to minimize the amount of time to complete the entire process and also minimizing the amount of potential customers from leaving. To streamline the process, it is important to recognize the transformations of the business as it moves along the entire learning curve when each scenario is considered and acted upon. Measuring the process of serving pizza The pizzeria has been in business since 1950 and has become a recognizable mainstay in Palm Springs, CA for its quality and uniqueness. As the business is being passed down, it is important for the successor to recognize the learning curve and understand the restaurant as it functions today. During peak times, the pizzeria staffs four wait staff and two kitchen workers. With customers arriving in groups of two to four every three to five minutes there are only 14 4-top tables, but no 2-top tables to seat each party. The entire process from when a customer walks into the pizzeria to the time they leave takes 53 minutes. Eleven of the minutes are consumed just waiting to be seated at an open table and another 13 minutes are consumed back in the kitchen processing the order – room for improvement. Applying the learning curve theorem By turning four of the 4-tops into eight 2-tops, it increases the total tables available at the pizzeria from 14 to 18 and effectively reduces the average wait time to 5. 27 minutes. The additional tables also allow the utilization of the wait staff to a manageable and profitable 87%. The observations and learning’s of the first two weeks have allowed the pizzeria to become more efficient, reduce the amount of time customers have to wait, reduced the amount of customers who have â€Å"balked† and left before they could be served and has increased the profit from $1065 to $1653. Identifying process weaknesses The Pizzeria has incorporated key improvements from observations of the process. Unfortunately, it is necessary to invest in capital with newer more advanced systems in order to sustain the growth. In this case, the four manual ovens are beginning to hinder the current process and the wait staff has become less effective. So by replacing the four manual ovens with two automated conveyor ovens from Plax reduced the mean processing time to four minutes and by installing the MenuPoint system has reduced the mean processing time for the wait staff to eight minutes. The average wait time now in the pizzeria is only 4. 4 minutes with an average queue time of only 2. 63 minutes. Expanding on what’s been learned The Pizzeria is experiencing, as I have heard it called, â€Å"A champagne problem† increased potential business – which, is good, but how to handle it? In this case, the location next to the Pizzeria, Cream Puffs, is closing and offers a perfect opportunity to expand the Pizzeria by seven more 4-tops and four more 2-tops. This reduces the wa iting time even further to an average of 3. 47 minutes with an average queue of 2. 7 minutes. Conclusion Mario and his wife Sofia have done an outstanding job building the business since 1950, however; there was much more opportunity available for the Pizzeria to run more efficient and generate a greater profit. Mario’s successor became more familiar with maintaining a balance between the customer demand for the service and the capacity of the system to provide the service. His management of the Pizzeria became more effective and processes became more efficient as he moved along the learning curve.
